China vows ‘peaceful reunification’ with Taiwan

Chinese president Xi Jinping promised to realize “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan Saturday, capping every week of escalating tensions with the island.

Taiwan, which is democratically dominated, responded that solely its residents may determine its future, and referred to as on China to finish its coercion. Taiwan has come beneath elevated army strain from China to simply accept its rule.

In a speech at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, Xi mentioned that the Chinese individuals have a “glorious tradition” of preventing towards separatism.

“Taiwan independence separatism is the biggest obstacle to achieving the reunification of the motherland, and the most serious hidden danger to national rejuvenation,” he mentioned, in accordance with a Reuters report.

The speech, which was made on the anniversary of the revolution that overthrew the final imperial dynasty in 1911, struck a a lot milder tone than one in July when Xi vowed to “smash” Taiwan’s makes an attempt at independence.
